Using Popplet in 1st Grade

First graders at Carol Stream School are using the Popplet Lite app in reading to create their concept maps! Last week they were reading "Sam, Come Back" and discussing their essential question which was: “What do pets need?” Based on the story, the class worked together to brainstorm what pets need. Their teacher used those ideas to create a concept map on the classroom whiteboard, then students set to work creating the same concept map on their iPads using Popplet Lite. Last, the students spent some time adding pictures from their story that matched the words in their concept map. When the concept maps are finished, students will save the map to their photo roll and upload it to their Google Drive. This will enable them to refer back to those maps and to share them with their families.

The first grades will be creating concept maps with each unit, building their ability to make use of the app more independently each week, and will be able to use the concept maps to look back and reflect on their learning. The goal is for students to develop an understanding of concept maps and to use them to support their learning in other content areas.

Popplet Lite is available on all iPads preschool through 2nd grade. If you would like support as you make use of Popplet Lite in your classroom, feel free to complete the PLS and ask for Becky. Here is a video that provides a quick tutorial for using Popplet Lite.

Writing to Learn - from Edutopia

Edutopia published a wonderful blog post: Low-Stakes Writing: Writing to Learn, Not Learning to Write This blog post gives practical ideas for incorporating writing across the day at any grade level and in any content area. The goal for writing is to get kids writing as much as possible - so much, that it is near impossible to keep up with them!  The more they write and publish to an authentic audience, the more authentic feedback they can receive. All of the ideas in the blog post align to and can be combined with our district's writing supplemental resource: The Common Core Writing Book (K-5) The Common Core Writing Book (6-8) If you do not have a copy of the book for your grade level, please contact the Teaching, Learning and Innovation Department to get a copy. Want to start implementing, but not sure where to start?  Check with your building's instructional coach!  Your instructional coach is there to assist you and provide support as you look to incoropor...

PebbleGo on the iPad

PebbleGo!   There are so many topics our students research - and with PBL coming up, the topics will grow! Some of those topics are available in PebbleGo . PebbleGo is not an app. It is a website that is accessible through Safari on the iPad. Your students can access PebbleGo using the QR code below. If you are not sure what PebbleGo is, or if you are unsure of your building username and password for PebbleGo, check in with your LLC Director. Before your students log into PebbleGo, spend some time exploring and discovering what is available to them. When you get to PebbleGo and have logged in, choose a category - right now the options are Animals, Science, Biographies and Social Studies. In each category there are a number of topics. Choose the one you want to further explore. PebbleGo offers options for text to be read aloud, some videos, as well as other activities that can be imported into and completed in Explain Everything if you choose. PebbleGo is also a great p...
