Welcome Back CCSD93!

Welcome back from CurTech93!  We are very excited for the 2016-2017 school year!

We have three professional development opportunities to consider for the first part of the school year.  Please let Karen and Becky know if you have any questions.

We will be hosting the Discovery Education DEN Ambassador Phase 1 program again this fall.  This LEAD course will introduce you to the DEN Ambassador program, focus on incorporating technology and teaching with digital media, and looking into all the opportunities for learning and growth with Discovery Education.  We have three face-to-face meetings (with pizza!):
Wednesday, September 14th Elsie Johnson Innovation Center 4:15pm-5:45pm
Wednesday, October 19th Carol Stream Innovation Center 4:15pm-5:45pm
Wednesday, November 30th Roy DeShane Innovation Center 4:15pm-5:45pm

We are offering an online book study for the book Flip Your Classroom by John Bergmann and Aaron Sams.  Bergmann and Sams give practical advice and tips for flipping your classroom.  All teachers, all grade levels and content areas can benefit from this book study.  The book study meets completely online.  We have no set meeting time (My Learning Plan indicates a day/time, but it is simply a placeholder).  This is a work at your own pace book study.  The book study begins November 4th.  Books will be provided to anyone enrolled in My Learning Plan.

Finally, we are offering the Independent Study again for the year.  Independent Study allows you to explore and take a series of lessons or a unit to the deeper end of the SAMR pool.  Participants can work individually or in a group setting.  You keep track of your individual hours throughout your study.  Everyone participates in our Showcase of Learning in May - an informal presentation/poster session of projects from the year.  Our review/informational meeting is on Wednesday, September 21st at the District Office 4:15pm-5:15pm.  Please sign-up in My Learning Plan or contact Karen and Becky if you are interested.

All three of these opportunities are available in My Learning Plan.

Writing to Learn - from Edutopia

Edutopia published a wonderful blog post: Low-Stakes Writing: Writing to Learn, Not Learning to Write This blog post gives practical ideas for incorporating writing across the day at any grade level and in any content area. The goal for writing is to get kids writing as much as possible - so much, that it is near impossible to keep up with them!  The more they write and publish to an authentic audience, the more authentic feedback they can receive. All of the ideas in the blog post align to and can be combined with our district's writing supplemental resource: The Common Core Writing Book (K-5) The Common Core Writing Book (6-8) If you do not have a copy of the book for your grade level, please contact the Teaching, Learning and Innovation Department to get a copy. Want to start implementing, but not sure where to start?  Check with your building's instructional coach!  Your instructional coach is there to assist you and provide support as you look to incoropor...

Using the DOODLE BUDDY APP in Math

Some classes are creating subtraction number stories using the Doodle Buddy App! Students use the stamps in Doodle Buddy to create the picture of their story and then use the pen in the app to cross out stamps and write their number sentence. Students can then take a screen shot and put it in their google drive to share with their teacher. Take it one step further! Have students put their Doodle Buddy picture in Explain Everything, Educreations, Tell About This or Write About This so that they can record their explanation of their number story. Now teachers have evidence of the student’s thinking and can plan for the next step in moving that student along in their understanding of mathematical concepts! Works great for addition number stories, too! Model creating number stories with whole class Students work independently or collaboratively to create number stories Students take screen shot to save their work
